Picture
Erika graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies, specializing in ESL, from the University of North TX. She realized teaching high school was her passion and taught Family and Consumer Science at Garland High School for four years. She resigned from teaching to pursue a Master of Humanities, with a concentration in Psychology, from the University of Dallas. During her time there, she had the opportunity to study abroad in Italy, Cuba, and Costa Rica. She has been mentoring high school and college-age girls for almost a decade. She is currently a Montessori Educator and mother of two toddlers. As a teacher, mentor, aunt, and mother, she is passionate about lifting up young Latinas and supporting them to be the curators of their success. She has been involved with LIP in various capacities for seven years, and currently serves as the LIP Co-Chair on the HWNT Board.

Paloma was raised in Mexico and grew up with a vision of educating herself to become a role model. Her desire to pave the way for others grew when she moved to the USA, graduated, and found a career she is passionate about. She feels blessed to have been able to do this and wants to help others do the same. Paloma started her career in Finance and Insurance after graduating with a double major in Marketing and Global Business from the University of Texas at Dallas. She became a Financial Services Professional at New York Life and her passion for mentoring and helping others succeed led her to her current role as a Partner. She is responsible for the hiring and development of new Associates and believes mentorship is key to success. She has been mentored by top Executives within her company as well as serving as a mentor for others, especially Latinas and young professionals. Paloma is a wife and a dog mom of “Oliver,” who was adopted in 2016. She loves exploring new places and traveling with her husband and friends. Paloma has several years of experience with LIP and also serves as LIP Co-Chair on the HWNT Board.

Scholarship Chair

Arlyn was born and raised in Dallas, TX and is a proud descendant of Guatemala. As a first-generation college student, Arlyn understands how difficult it is to navigate the college journey. She remembers not knowing the difference between private and public universities and not understanding the huge difference in cost. Seeking out programs, similar to Latinas in Progress, helped her move forward in her education. She attended Texas Tech University where she received her Bachelor's in Biology and then received her license as a Registered Dental Hygienist. After 10 yrs as a dental hygienist, she decided to pursue a Master's. In May 2019 she completed her Master's in Healthcare Administration and Leadership from the University of Texas at Dallas. Arlyn wants to make an impact in our healthcare system and currently is looking for the next opportunity that will allow her to make a difference in health equity. She currently serves as the Scholarship-Chair of the LIP program where she hopes to be a resource for students just like her.

End of Year Coordinator

Laura is a Dallas native of Ecuadorian descent. As a first-generation student, Laura understands how vital education is and strongly believes in paving the way for our future young generations. Her passion for helping others was installed at a young age and still holds a special place in her professional and personal life. Previously, she worked in education and had the privilege to help both students and parents understand the educational systems in Texas and the great opportunities they offer. The advice she received from a former colleague still resonates and fuels her passion to help others, "when you see first-generation students, remember your journey and be the advocate both you and your parents desperately needed and deserved." She later switched her career path to healthcare and currently works in the Digital and Virtual Health realm at Texas Health. She obtained her master's from Louisiana State University in the Fall of 22'. She has been a part of LIP as a mentor for a few years now and serves as the EOY coordinator. Laura also currently serves as the Secretary on the HWNT Board.

Mentors & Committees

Mentorship Program:
The Mentorship Program and LIP Committees are composed of dedicated volunteers who help LIP students strengthen their leadership skills.
  • Students have access to established professional mentors who will help foster confidence, as well as allow learning through role modeling, and offered valuable advice and support, along with resources for their overall pursuits.
  • Team Leads interact and communicate with mentees to ensure retention in our program and aid with college preparation.
  • Mentors participate and attend all seminars, Mentor Convocation, End-of-Year Ceremony, and all other activities as desired.
  • All mentors should be members of the HWNT organization.
  • All LIP alumni are invited to return and join the HWNT organization.

Committees:
LIP has various committees that help serve and support the LIP Program. These typically meet during certain dedicated times. If any of these committees interest you, please contact us.

End-of-Year Committee
  • This committee focuses solely on all preparations for the end-of-year ceremony. At this ceremony, scholarships are awarded to qualifying LIP students and this allows HWNT and LIP to celebrate all students' achievements.
  • Meets once a month, typically November- May
Scholarship Committee
  • This committee reviews all criteria for eligible students and selects recipients to be awarded. All members of this committee are not associated or hold any relationships with LIP scholarship candidates. (i.e., parent or mentor)
  • Meets towards the end of the program, typically February -May
LIP Alumnae Committee
  • This committee grants all LIP alumni the opportunity to return and give back to their community. They can do so in various ways, such as mentorship, panel guests, and HWNT/LIP committee/board members.
  • Meets periodically to support ongoing events with LIP

Volunteers:
You do not have to be a mentor to join a committee. We understand you might face time constraints due to other obligations and perhaps you cannot commit the time to be a mentor, but there are other areas you can help in. We count on the support of our volunteers in other avenues like chaperones for trips, contributions for snacks, or providing food for specific events, or perhaps you are a subject matter expert regarding the topics we cover at seminars and can provide expert advice on a panel. We are grateful for your help and support in any capacity!
